Tree Art Journaling

My art and eco art therapy journeys are intertwined with my art journal (or doodle book). This is a book I take out with me running errands, going to work or for walks when I want to pause and break out of my productivity focused routine.

Sitting with my book with a pen or pencil creates a mindful and intentional space, even if it is on sticky train seat or an ornate Victorian park bench. This time is important for resting and meditating on the moment, assisted through the process of drawing small elements of the world around me, for 5, 10 or even 60 minutes.

I use this space to focus on my surroundings and connect to my senses. This moment has a grounding effect for me, bringing me into the present moment and away from the pressures of production and chores that fill most of everyday life. It has become a Sunday ritual!

This activity can also play a part in the eco-psychological idea of reconnecting with nature and the surrounding life for our own wellbeing. For example my practice now actively revolves around sitting and locating the nearest tree. Observing a tree, my focus is drawn out and connected intentionally. I observe the trees shape and reflect on its strength and unique character. This moment of creativity and appreciation of the tree, as a metaphor of nature, brings me mindfulness and contributes to my personal wellness journey.

It does not have to be 'perfect' or a chore, the simpler, the better.

Resources:

A little sketch/notebook (or loose sheets you can keep together)

Pen/Pencil (anything that makes marks!)

Process:

Find a safe place to perch and rest with your resources.

Observe your space and choose some elements of the nature around you that you would like to focus on and capture in a doodle - perhaps a little weed popping through the pavement, a large oak tree in a church yard …. look around and see what captures your focus.

Whilst drawing, or after you could reflect on these ideas;

  • What can you smell, hear and feel where you are?

  • How did you feel before you started? Do you feel any different now?

  • What drew you to choose the tree you connected with/ are drawing? Does it have any particular features you like?

  • What traits does your chosen object symbolise to you? Strength, resilience, beauty…..

I also like to date and write the location on my journal entries, so I can look back and remember/reflect on the moments.
