Art Therapy VS Therapeutic Art
Both Art Therapy and Therapeutic Art activities offer relief from the negative impacts of stress and mental health challenges. They do this through introducing a new means of creative expression.
However, they are quite different in how they operate and their goals.
Most notably, Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy and must be done with the guidance of a licensed Art Therapist.
As an Art therapist I like to work with both of these modalities, depending on individual needs, preferences and situation.
Here we explore the differences!
The benefits are also quite similar with some distinct differences.
ART THERAPY:
You will be able to use a safe space with a therapist to explore artistic/creative forms of expression.
You will be able to work through past traumas, experiences and mental-health challenges with a professional therapist.
The setting of an art therapy session and therapeutic relationship, allows for intentional self-discovery and reflection.
THERAPEUTIC ART MAKING:
Safely learn new skills, which can enhance your ability to express yourself and in-turn, increase your self-esteem.
Working in groups can help with building relationships and social skills.
Through self-expression, you can achieve a sense of wellbeing.
May help to alleviate some feelings of stress or anxiety (providing a meditative quality).
Which ever modality you choose to engage with, the power of your creative expression will help you on your individual wellness journey!
