Beach Mandala - Therapeutic Eco-Art Activity

Mandala art can be a great way to foster focus, relaxation and creativity.

The mandala is an ancient symbol that means 'sacred circle' in Sanskrit, (one of the oldest languages spoken in what is modern day India). It is thought by some that the geometric, repetitive shapes of the mandala communicate with a fundamental part of each person, creating a sacred space for connecting with the inner self and the world.

Mandalas can be meditative and calming to create. Circular movements and repeated designs help create a sense of continuity and flow, that can potentially ease feelings of tension and worry. The layers in each artwork can be symbolic to our memories, lives and our inner and outer world.

Combing mandala art making with the natural setting of the beach creates the ideal eco-art therapy setting, for connecting with nature and your inner creative expression. Exploring the sensory delights of the shore like shells, pebbles, or seaweed can help you tap into memories, emotions, and past events that you can also reflect upon and grow from.

I ventured down onto the beach on a warm, cloudy afternoon to create a moment of peace for myself. It was easy to become absorbed in scouring the beach for treasures to use, being guided by picking things up that resonated with me.

I record my process here in case you would like to try it for yourself!

Resources:

A beach setting

Beach treasures (being careful not to disturb any creatures)

Process:

Walk along the beach, selecting treasures (pebbles, shells, seaweed … whatever you’re drawn to!)

Find a clear peaceful spot to stop with your treasures.

Daw a circle in the sand with your finger.

Begin filling the circle with your treasures, from the centre outwards.

You may work in a circular way, building rings of treasures in a creative way. Allow yourself to play and work however you feel most comfortable to fill your circle.

When you are finished pause to admire your co-created art work with nature.

Reflective prompts:

What feelings do you notice in your body after you are finished with your art work?

Do you feel different compared to how you felt before you started the Mandala work?

How did you feel collecting the treasures? Do you notice any items you appeared drawn to in particular, white stones, blue shells etc..?

How do you feel leaving this art for others to discover?

See where the process takes you and see what peace you can find in your Mandala making. Just remember to be conscious of the environment, moving and taking only what you need.
